2022-23 Topps Dynasty UEFA Soccer is finally here after waiting for what seems like forever. OK so it’s only been 2 years, but a soccer card set with this much anticipation it felt like forever. I want to first give credit to Topps for finally giving us soccer card collectors a high end product. Up until this point only Panini has done this for us. Making an all on-card, all match worn patch set like this takes a lot more effort then simply pumping out chrome cards and slapping sticker autos on them. Topps will make much less from this set than most of the hobby products they put out this year. I do think they could have executed a bit better, which I will get into below, but I do want to thank them for this set. OK let’s get into what you can expect from 2022-23 TOPPS Dynasty Soccer.

2022-23 TOPPS Dynasty UEFA Soccer Breakdown

2023-24-topps-dyasty-uefa

ChecklistHERE
Box Makeup – (Search On Ebay) – 1 card per box, 5 boxes per case
Print Run – ~5,000 boxes or ~1,000 cases (not the odds don’t all add up but they are all in the ballpark +- of 1000 cases. I wish Topps gave us all the cards like Panini does in their super high end.)
Rookie Breakdown – There are not any rookies unless they are Mystery Redemptions.

Soccer Cards HQ Review – I have been gathering as much info about 2022-23 TOPPS Dynasty UEFA Soccer as I could the past 18 months so I had a pretty good idea of what to expect. I knew it was going to be printed a lot more than most people expected. I also had a pretty good idea of the checklist though there area couple of names I thought would be on there that are missing. One thing I definitely did not expect was there to be non patch autos. To my knowledge there has never been a Topps Dynasty card in any other sport that wasn’t a patch auto card. If that is not the case I am sure someone will let me know. This completely changes the product in my opinion. Topps came out with a high end product last year for MLS soccer called Renaissance. That set featured a mix of patch and non patch autos similar to this Dynasty product. I guess Topps figured if they called this Renaissance that it wouldn’t have had the excitement or value that Dynasty does. Regardless of why it happened, it happened and it does take away a little bit from the cache and value of the product. The good news is only ~25% of the cards are auto only.

The excitement for 2022-23 Topps Dynasty UEFA seemed to calm way down once the checklist was released. I don’t find that it’s that bad considering Topps couldn’t have Kylian Mbappe or Christian Pulisic due to their Panini exclusivity. Much of the checklist has been in Topps products recently. I think a lot of people forgot or didn’t realize this was a 2022-23 season product so that means no Lamine Yamal. It is a very legend heavy checklist and there hasn’t been much complaining about those cards. The problem seems to have come with a lot of the current player choices of which there are no rookies. The 2022-23 rookie class hasn’t turned out to be great like 2023-24 but having one or two would likely have got some people more excited. The inclusion of players like Karim Adeyemi, Kyogo Furuhashi, Mason Mount to name a few really had people floored. I give Topps credit they got ahead of this by including a disclosure that if you hit a card of 1 of 14 less desirable players then “Mystery Redemptions are paired on average with select autograph relic cards.” That line is a bit vague as it makes it seem like you aren’t guaranteed to get a Mystery Redemption with all those players, but you could. Take a look at some of the active players on that 14 player list as it provides a lesson of just how quickly fortunes can change for young players in the hobby. Prospecting is hard, but Topps saved a lot of people in that regards with this checklist not having many young players. As for the Mystery Redemption itself I am of the belief that Cristiano Ronaldo will be a Mystery Redemption (Search On eBay). It was rumored that having him sign was one of the delays of the product. I don’t know if he is the only Mystery Redemption. If Topps handles this like they did the 2023 Topps MLS Mystery Redemptions, which turned out to only be Lionel Messi, then CR7 will be the only one. Only time will tell on that. The Mystery Redemptions do add a bit of intrigue to the product.

Let’s get into the 2022-23 TOPPS Dynasty UEFA non patch auto cards (Search On eBay) first. This checklist is missing Leo Mess and Erling Haaland but does have players like Ronaldinho, Ronaldo (R9), Zidane and some Mystery Redemptions. Ideally you don’t want to hit a non patch auto in your box. If you do you better hope it’s either a 1/1 or one of those players I mentioned and maybe a couple more if you want to get value back. Only roughly have of the players in the single player non patch auto checklist have /10 and there are no /5 for these. Usually the way this works is the best players only get a 1/1, but this is something that we won’t know for sure until they are all opened. The good news is it does look like all 16 dual non patch auto got a full run of /1, /5 and /10. All the cards in that dual checklist are legends.

Enough about the non patch cards which isn’t what Dynasty is all about. Let’s look at the 2022-23 Topps Dynasty UEFA patch auto (Search On eBay) checklist. There are 3 different formats for these Autographed Dual Patch, Autographed Patch, and Dual Autographed Patch. Most of the cards come from the Autographed Patch checklist. In fact over 60% of the entire set comes from this checklist. There are 278 total 1/1 in this checklist if you include the Mystery Redemptions. There are about 250 /5 in the checklist. I don’t know which roughly 28 cards won’t get /5 cards but I do know if you add up the amount of Messi, Haaland and Mystery Redemptions in this checklist it equals 29. That could just be a coincidence, but it is something to keep in mind when buying break spots. Pay attention to which cards you see coming out once this starts getting opened. (UPDATE: I have now seen Mystery Redemptions that say Black so there will be parallels of them.) Topps has previewed some special inscription 1/1 cards and those are very cool and will be big chases. For the Dual Patch Auto (Search On eBay) it looks like only ~11 of the will get /10 and there are no /5. You can go down that checklist and try to figure out who you think will be getting only 1/1. For the Dual Autographed Patch there are only roughly 20 total /5 cards for the 4 card checklist so all 4 get an /5.

So what does it all mean and is 2022-23 Topps Dynasty UEFA worth buying? Well that depends on how you are buying. Let’s start with buying singles which is obviously the way to go with this product as it is with all others. This will be a classic set no doubt. I don’t think it will be a Flawless type set because the design is not quite there. From what we have seen so far it looks like a lot of the players signed with a darker color pen over their pics which sometimes makes them hard to see. That seems like a little thing, but when you are coming for an all time set those things matter. When you are buying singles do yourself a favor and at least take a look at Flawless and even Eminence comps before you decide to buy. It will help show you what the future may look like.

Another thing hurting this product will be that Lionel Messi was playing at PSG when this set was made. The PSG are his only playing day cards in the set and we all know by now that Messi PSG cards tend to be his least desirable. The Barcelona cards will deservedly be the most expensive cards in the product, but they aren’t playing day. If you are asking yourself why does playing day matter here is why. At the end of the day card value is about supply and demand. If Topps keeps making Dynasty for years to come there is a good chance they will find a way to keep putting Lionel Messi Barcelona cards in. That means the potential number of those cards is endless. What we do know is that eventually playing day cards end and we know when they end therefor we know the supply. If you are in this hobby for the long run it’s something you may want to consider. It is a point I wanted to get across and since more people will read this review than most I wanted to include it. The matter of how much it will matter in the future is not something we will know for quite some time. The good news for Topps is that this set coincides with Erling Haaland setting the EPL goal scoring record along with winning the Treble. If it turns out Topps is going to make more of this than something like that should be a differentiator that helps those cards. As for the Haaland Salzburg cards they seem very gimmicky to me. I am a Haaland collector and I would rather have his City cards from this set for the reasons I mentioned above. Topps could keep pumping out Haaland Salzburg cards if they want but they can never recreate another EPL scoring record Treble winning card again unless Haaland pulls off those feats again. If you are going to be buying 2022-23 TOPPS Dynasty UEFA your hope is that Topps decides this all wasn’t worth it and never makes it again.

As for getting into breaks and opening boxes it’s going to be quite the gamble. I think Topps is releasing boxes at $1200 which is low when you look at what people were thinking in presale. I think that is fair by Topps considering the hype around and knowing they probably could have got more. If they come out higher than $1200 I take that fair comment back. Obviously at $1200 for a single card box you can get absolutely wrecked and it’s not going to be for everyone. If you have limited card funds please don’t gamble it away on this product. 3 case PYP pricing is coming out to be more than you could buy a Flawless or Eminence card of that player in most cases of the lower end players. Just go buy the single and save yourself the disappointment. (UPDATE: Messi has some /5 live and /10 redemptions so he will have a lot of cards. That will help the product. As for how much it helps, we will have to wait to see what this increased supply sell for.)

What I am really afraid of is that Topps sells out at $1200 and prices shoot up. We already see that breakers are being extra greedy with most pricing case breaks over $10,000 with the highest I have seen so far over $14000. There will be very small percentage of cards in this set worth more than $2,000 much less $10,000. A little secret is that the breakers didn’t get much allocation of this product which is why the price gouging is out of control. You can learn a lot about your favorite breaker with how they are pricing Dynasty. If prices shoot up simply due to limited supply we are going to see an Eminence problem. That problem where even a great case doesn’t get you your money back. A breaker just recently opened what would be considered a great case as it had Ronaldo and Pele and even then it still won’t cover what cases are selling for. I know that even with this knowledge many of you will still find a way to get involved with boxes or breaks because there are a lot of gamblers out there. Just make sure you do it responsibly and don’t get caught up in the FOMO. You can buy a lot of really cool cards for what these prices are going for.
